Termite Control in Florida

Termite control is one of the most essential services a home or any other building or structure needs in the Tampa Bay area. Termite infestation is one the largest causes of structural damage, rivaling any of Mother Natures' destructive forces including fire, flooding, and powerful winds. The cost of termite damage exceeds $500 million annually in the state of Florida according to recent university studies.

Here in Florida, where the temperate climate provides a perfect environment for these destructive pests, many homeowners will discover termites as they swarm from their nests when the weather changes in spring and mid-fall. This threat to most people's single largest asset, their home, is frightening. But there are methods of termite control and eradication that will protect your home and your investment in it.

About Termites

Termites feed on wood and may also destroy paper products such as books and cardboard boxes. They live in large colonies composed of the queen, king, winged reproductive swarmers, soldiers and workers. Worker termites are the most numerous and inflict the most damage.

In older homes, an annual inspection for termites is a must. However, these inspections may not discover termites when they first infest. Termites do their damage behind closed walls. You may discover them when remodeling or when they swarm in the spring or fall.

When a home is remodeled, termite control is often required. Many times contractors will often use an Exterior Insulation Finish Systems or as they are commonly known as an EIFS system, which are fantastic ways to finish or restore a home or other type of building. An EIFS system will not only finish off the exterior of the building but they also provide insulation and waterproofing systems in one composite system. The problem is that termites like the EIFA system foam: not to eat it, but to move through it. It gives them cover and freedom of movement so they can get to the "wood buffet". Because they need a continual source of water and are not fond of sunshine, termites build protective tunnels from the ground to their target so that they can move back and forth. Being able to spot these tunnels is the main way we can detect the presence of the termites and provide effective protection.

New home buyers may be lulled into a false sense of security by builders who use unproven termite control measures, such as spraying untreated wall studs with borates. The growing practice of coating wall studs with borate to a height of about 24 inches has not been proven to prevent termite damage. Termites have the ability to enter at the bottom of the stud and tunnel up through the center of the 2-by-4-inch wall supports

Preventing Termites

Foam insulation is an energy conserving addition to your home. However, if the foam insulation board is installed either in direct contact or in close proximity to the soil or grade, termites have a readily available entranceway into your home. Foam insulation board is easily penetrated and tunneled through by termites. In fact, termites have been known to penetrate and tunnel through lead, vinyl and PVC plastics. The foam insulation board also retains critical moisture which termites need to survive.

Where siding is installed below grade level or in direct contact with soil, termites can build their mud tubes between the siding and foundation and enter your home completely undetected. This is the case whatever the exterior siding material -- brick, wood, stucco, vinyl or even coquina. Although it may be aesthetically appealing to have siding meet the soil, termite entry is virtually impossible to spot. Professional termite control will be required. Additionally, some types of paint prove porous to rain or sprinkler water. This additional moisture in a wall could support a colony of termites above ground where the pretreatment barrier would have no effect.

When concrete is involved, although small hairline cracks are normal in most slabs, large settlement cracks provide access for subterranean termites. Conventional chemical treatments rely on the integrity of the concrete.

The Three Types of Termites

The three principal types of termites in Florida are subterranean, dampwood, and drywood termites. Subterranean termites are the most destructive and frequently encountered kind of termite found Termite control is one of the most essential services a home or any other building or structure needs in the Tampa Bay area. Termite infestation is one the largest causes of structural damage, rivaling any of Mother Natures' destructive forces including fire, flooding, and powerful winds. Some bait products are inserted below ground out in the yard, whereas others are installed above ground level on the inside of the structure. Baits are applied below ground by enticing termites to feed on wooden stakes, cardboard, or some other cellulose-based material. The toxicant-laced bait can either be installed initially, or substituted after termites have been detected in an untreated monitoring device. The more below ground baits installed, the better the chances of locating termites.

Termite baits may also be installed above ground in known areas of termite activity. Typically, the stations are installed directly in the path of active termite tunnels after the mud tubes have been broken. Effects tend to be more rapid with above-ground baiting because the procedure does not depend upon "chance" termite encounters with the stations. While chemical barrier treatments under and around the foundation are effective, they deteriorate over time and must be reapplied about every five years to retain effective termite control.
