Many people ask us why there are so many insects and other pests in Florida. The main cause is our subtropical climate. The combination of mild winters, hot summers, relatively high humidity, ample rainfall and lush flora , woods, and landscaping work together to provide what amounts to a paradise for pests. Most pests live outdoors and we rarely notice them. However, when they move into our homes and businesses, pest control can become required.

Three Steps for Effective Pest Control

  • Prevention
  • Identification
  • Control

Prevention of an infestation can greatly enhance the effectiveness of pest control. Pests generally enter buildings in search of three things: food, water and shelter. Keep all areas, with heavy emphasis on the kitchen and pantry, dry and free of exposed foods, especially sugary foods. Any open food packages should be stored in tightly sealed containers or in a refrigerator.

Other pest prevention measures include:

Reducing or discarding places for pests to nest and live, including all types of clutter, piled cardboard or wood boxes, rolled carpeting, and any type of stored paper.

Empty trash and trash can liners daily. Keep trash cans securely closed.

Caulk all interior and exterior cracks and crevices, which allow pests to enter.

Trim back vegetation that touches a building's exterior.

Proper identification of the pests by our certified technicians allows us to design the most effective treatment plan and control measures. There are four main pests in the Tampa Bay area whose infestations can require our professional pest control services:

Ants

Ant — Tampa, FL — Pestgo Exterminators Inc.

Most live outdoors, entering buildings in search of food and water. Some species, such as pharaoh or ghost ants, establish indoor colonies. Proper treatment depends on the type of ant. Carpenter ants can cause damage similar to that of termites. Fire ants, with their painful bite, are also a growing problem here in Tampa Bay.

Cockroaches

The German species (actually from Asia) and American cockroaches (from Africa) are the only ones to infest buildings.

Fleas

To control these pests you have to go after adults on pets, and larvae and eggs in carpets and pet resting sites. In between professional pest control services, tips for flea control include vacuuming to remove eggs and feces, washing your pets and their bedding, and using a flea comb on your pets.

Silverfish and firebrats

These are very common in homes and may cause damage by eating foods or other materials that are high in protein, sugar, or starch. They both eat cereals, moist wheat flour, paper on which there is glue or paste, book bindings, starch in clothing, and rayon fabrics.

The silverfish lives and develops in damp, cool places. Large numbers may be found in new buildings in which the newly plastered walls are still damp. The firebrat lives and develops in hot, dark places, such as around furnaces and fireplaces, and in insulations around hot water or steam pipes. In apartment buildings the insects follow pipelines to rooms in search of food. They may be found in bookcases, around closet shelves, behind baseboards, windows or door frames.

Proper pest control will depend on the size and type of your infestation. Recommended treatments can range from monthly visits for pesticide application, to tenting and fumigation for more serious and advanced infestations.
